In hopes of reviving the city’s waterfront, Sacramento has commissioned five design and architecture teams to develop new design concepts for Old Sacramento.

The five teams are Atlas Lab Inc.; Stantec Inc.; The Hettema Group; Perkins Eastman; and a consortium between LPA Inc., Hargreaves Associates and RSM Design.

At a news conference Monday morning, Mayor Darrell Steinberg emphasized his administration’s focus on rejuvenating Old Sacramento and the waterfront in the coming year.

“2019 is the breakthrough year for the riverfront,” Steinberg said before a crowd on the waterfront embarcadero. He added, “We have a renewed city commitment, and something we haven’t had in a long time: money.”

Andrew Wickham, a design coordinator with LPA, said one of the biggest design challenges will be getting people closer to the water while planning for multiple water levels during different seasons. Currently, visitors can see the Sacramento River from an elevated embarcadero. Wickham said he would like to open the waterfront up for more recreational activities, like kayaking and paddleboarding.
